Endolift® vs facelift

A facelift and Endolift® both set out to firm a loosening jaw and neck, and that is roughly where the likeness ends. One repositions tissue and removes skin; the other firms what is already there, and seeing that difference makes the choice far clearer.

The comparison people bring to consultation

My own Endolift® procedures now number more than a thousand, face and body together, and I teach the technique to doctors abroad. In all that time, no question has come up more often than this one: how does it compare with a facelift? It is a sensible thing to ask. Both are aimed at the same stretch of the face, from the jowl to the neck, and both hold out the prospect of a firmer line.

They are also very different procedures, and the honest answer starts with what each one physically does. Once that is clear, most people find they already know which direction they are leaning.

What a facelift does

A facelift is an operation, carried out by a surgeon, usually under general anaesthetic or deep sedation. Incisions are made around the ear and into the hairline, and through them the surgeon lifts the deeper supporting layer of the face, repositions it higher, and trims away the skin that is left over before closing. A neck lift is often done in the same operation.

What surgery offers is something no treatment through the skin can: it moves tissue that has descended and removes skin that is genuinely in excess. Where the skin hangs in folds along the jaw or at the neck, that is the change it was designed to address. Recovery takes place over a longer period, with bruising, swelling and the care of healing incisions, and the scars are placed to be as discreet as possible.

ART Clinic does not perform surgery. I describe it here because anyone weighing Endolift® deserves to understand the alternative properly.

What Endolift® does

Endolift® works on the tissue in place. After a local anaesthetic, a laser fibre about as fine as a few hairs is slipped beneath the skin through a pinpoint opening and moved slowly through the layer that has slackened. The energy it delivers tightens that layer a little at once, and sets off new collagen that goes on firming it over the following months.

Nothing is lifted to a new position and no skin is taken away. That is its limit and its appeal at the same time: the change is a firmer version of the tissue you have, arriving gradually, with your features and expressions left exactly as they were. There is no incision to heal. What you plan around is swelling, over days rather than the longer recovery of an operation, and you go home the same day.

Neither column wins every row. What matters is which rows describe the change in your face, and which recovery fits your life.

Why we don't call it a facelift without surgery

You will find Endolift® advertised as a way to get a facelift's result with no operation. We don't describe it that way, for two reasons.

The first is accuracy about the procedure. A laser fibre does enter the skin, under local anaesthetic, so it is a medical procedure performed by a doctor, and it is right to treat it as one. The second is accuracy about the result. Endolift® firms and tightens; it does not reposition tissue or remove skin, so promising a facelift's outcome would set up an expectation it was never designed to meet. Described for what it is, it is a very good treatment, and it has no need of the comparison.

Where each has its place

Endolift® is designed for the years when the jaw and neck have started to loosen and the skin still has some spring: a blurred jawline, jowls that have begun to settle, fullness beneath the chin, a softening neck. It suits people who want a firmer, more defined result without any change to how their face looks, and a recovery that fits between one week and the next.

A facelift is designed for a later and larger change: skin that hangs, bands and folds at the neck, and descent deep enough that it needs lifting back into place. It suits people who are ready for an operation and its recovery in exchange for that kind of repositioning.

Many faces sit somewhere between the two, and the choice is not always one or the other. Some people have Endolift® now and keep surgery in mind for later; others who had a facelift some years ago ask about Endolift® for the firmness it can add since.

How long each lasts, stated carefully

This is the question I am most careful with. Neither procedure stops time. A facelift moves the tissue to a new starting point, and the face goes on ageing from there. Endolift® firms the tissue and strengthens it with new collagen, and that tissue goes on ageing too, at its natural pace. Because surgery physically repositions tissue and removes skin, its change is generally regarded as the more lasting of the two.

For Endolift®, I would rather quote nothing than quote a number the published studies cannot yet carry. What we do instead is review your result once it has matured, and see together how it is holding.

Weighing it up with us

Plenty of people come to their consultation still undecided, and some have already spoken to a surgeon. Either is a good place to be. We assess your jaw and neck area by area and set out what Endolift® could achieve for each and what the recovery would ask of your diary, so you have something concrete to set beside a surgical opinion. The decision, and its timing, stay entirely yours.

Compare them for your own face

A consultation at ART Clinic gives you a clear picture of what Endolift® would do for your jaw and neck, what it would leave as it is, and how the weeks after would run, with the fee set out before any date is chosen. You won't be sold to, and you won't be pushed.
